The effects of visits from furry friends on the elderly and the resulting benefits.

A recent study published on March 25, 2023, by BioMedCentral sheds light on the profound effects of animals on the health and wellbeing of individuals residing in care homes. The systematic review, titled "What are the effects of animals on the health and wellbeing of residents in care homes? A systematic review of the qualitative and quantitative evidence," unveils significant findings regarding the positive impact of animal interaction on care home residents.
The review incorporated thirty-four studies, disseminated across 40 articles and through this analysis, five prominent themes emerged. These themes revolve around animals being perceived as

  • facilitating reminiscence and storytelling,
  • fostering a sense of care (both in action and emotion),
  • providing respite from loneliness, institutionalization, and illness, and promoting sensory engagement.
  • Additionally, two supplementary themes emerged regarding staff perceptions and wellbeing, as well as animal health and wellbeing, with the overarching theme of maintaining the individual’s identity.
In summary, the presence of animals in care homes significantly influences the health and wellbeing of residents, fostering meaningful relationships and providing both pleasure and comfort. Interacting with animals offers residents a means to uphold their sense of self within care home environments, with particular benefits observed among residents with dementia. Encouraging residents to engage with animals as part of resident focused care can enhance their sense of belonging and wellbeing within their environment.
Taking inspiration from these findings, TOTALCARE Living introduces visits from furry friends and other animals as a way to stimulate our residents sense of care and belonging.
